WHY THE EDGE COMPUTING?
Why often centralized cloud or server managed geographically distributed devices like IoT grid takes like forever to complete the task? People normally would first blame on the Internet connection, then the servers. Yet, have you consider it that way: If your main server, the “brain” of computing, needs to operate dozens and hundreds of networks and devices located at different locations simultaneously, how can it be effective? That main server or central cloud must constantly compute, coordinate, receive data from and send data to numerous connections. With growth of the network devices linked to the core facility we shall face the significant service degradation. And this is why Edge Computing was invented.

A good example of Edge computing can be a global taxi hiring application. Imagine all the requests are sent to one central server or cloud, which then needs to calculate all the possible solutions, matching requestors up with the right services, meanwhile keeping track of every single small change in the data base. Let’s just say that by common sense we already know this is not going to be fun. It will be slow due to long distance and when the number of queries will exceed the central servers capability… customers would be gone. Loss of clients is much more vulnerable than any money loss in highly competitive market of taxi aggregators! In this situation Edge computing comes handy! It manages the requests, calculates taxi movements and reports fast to the core and end user as well. Edge computing in the given example of taxi applications help to significantly improve the performance, reduce load on the central cloud and deliver the customer fastest possible response.

Example 2:
For companies with global locations, it is a challenge to manage all the resources: employees, premises, equipment or just how many bottles of wine you keep in the office pantry. Of cause to hold a full control over your digital premises cloud office is the best solution regarding security, cost reductions and power efficiency. But what happen if you have remote office in Brazil and core of your cloud servers located in Europe? The performance of thin clients connected to virtual office in Europe will be extremely slow due to high latency and poor connectivity between Europe and Latin America.
